TRON Private Key: Format, Address Derivation, Storage
What a TRON private key looks like (64 hex characters), how the T… address is derived from it, how it relates to a recovery phrase, and how to store and import it safely.
A TRON private key is a secret 256-bit number that controls a TRON account. Whoever has it can move every TRX and USDT on the address. It is usually written as 64 hexadecimal characters (0–9, a–f).
What a TRON private key looks like
| Example (never use published keys!) | |
|---|---|
| Private key | 64 hex characters, e.g. 0000…0001 |
| Public key | 128 hex characters (64 bytes, uncompressed without the 04 prefix) |
| Address | TMVQGm1qAQYVdetCeGRRkTWYYrLXuHK2HC |
The example above is the address of the key 1 — a well-known key that anyone can use, so treat such addresses as public property. Scammers even place "bait" balances on them with changed permissions.
From private key to address
- The private key is multiplied by the secp256k1 generator point → public key.
- Keccak-256 of the public key → take the last 20 bytes.
- Prefix
0x41, add a checksum, encode in base58 →T…address.
The process is one-way: an address never reveals its key. Full details in TRON address format explained.
Private key vs recovery phrase
A recovery phrase (12 or 24 words) is a master backup from which a wallet derives many keys. TRON wallets use the derivation path m/44'/195'/0'/0/0 for the first account. A single private key controls one account only. A vanity address comes as a private key, not a phrase.
How to store a TRON private key
- Keep it offline: paper, a hardware-encrypted drive, or a reputable password manager.
- Never paste it into websites, chat bots or "support" forms — real support never asks for it.
- Make two backups in different safe places.
- For large balances, consider moving the account's owner permission to a multisig — see is a vanity address safe?
How to import it
TronLink, Trust Wallet and TokenPocket can import a raw private key: Import wallet → Private key. Step-by-step: how to import a TRON private key into TronLink.
FAQ
How many characters is a TRON private key?
64 hexadecimal characters (32 bytes).
Can I get the private key from a TRON address?
No. Deriving the key from the address is computationally impossible — that is what keeps funds safe.
Is a TRON private key the same as an Ethereum private key?
The format is the same (a secp256k1 key), and the same key produces related addresses on both networks. Still, treat each network separately and never reuse keys you have exposed.
Someone offered a "TRON private key with balance". Should I use it?
No. It is a scam: the account is usually controlled by other keys, so the funds cannot be withdrawn. Check it with the address checker.
