How to Send USDT TRC20: Fees, Energy and Safety Checks
Step-by-step: send USDT on the TRON network from a wallet or exchange, why you need TRX for the fee, how to pay less, and five checks before you press Send.
Sending USDT TRC20 takes a minute, but two things trip people up: the network fee is paid in TRX, not USDT, and transfers cannot be reversed. Here is the full process.
Before you start
- The recipient's
T…address. It must be a TRON address (34 characters, starts withT). An address starting with0xbelongs to another network. - Some TRX in your wallet for the fee, unless you send from an exchange, which charges its own withdrawal fee.
Sending from a wallet (TronLink, Trust Wallet, TokenPocket)
- Open USDT (TRC20) in your wallet and tap Send.
- Paste the recipient's address. Do not type it by hand, and do not copy it from your transaction history.
- Enter the amount and review the estimated fee.
- Confirm. The transfer usually arrives in under a minute. Track it on Tronscan by the transaction hash.
Sending from an exchange
On Binance, OKX, Bybit and others choose Withdraw → USDT, then select the TRC20 / TRON network. The exchange shows a fixed withdrawal fee and pays the network costs itself. Wrong network selection is the most common way funds get lost.
Why the fee is in TRX
A USDT transfer runs the token contract, which consumes energy and bandwidth. If your account has no staked energy, the network burns TRX to pay for it:
- A transfer to an address that already holds USDT needs about 65,000 energy.
- A transfer to an address that has never held USDT needs roughly double.
Ways to pay less: stake TRX for energy, rent energy from a provider, or use a wallet that offers subsidised transfers. Details in TRON energy and bandwidth.
Five checks before pressing Send
- Network: TRC20 address
T…, TRC20 network selected. - Full address match: compare all 34 characters with the original source, not just the start and end. Lookalike addresses are a common scam: see address poisoning.
- Account check: paste the address into the free address checker to see that it is valid and who controls it.
- Test amount: for large sums, send a small amount first.
- Exact amount: some services, including HaoKey, match payments by the exact amount. Send exactly what the invoice says.
FAQ
How long does a USDT TRC20 transfer take?
Usually under a minute. TRON produces a block every 3 seconds; services typically wait for a few confirmations.
Why did my transfer fail with "out of energy"?
The account did not have enough TRX to burn for the energy. Top up TRX and try again.
Can I cancel a USDT transfer?
No. Blockchain transfers are final. Only the recipient can send funds back.
